Former Brisbane lord mayor Sallyanne Atkinson, who with Coates orchestrated Brisbane’s 1992 bid, said although the Queensland economy was presently flat, the target Games were still 13 years away.
“Bidding for the Games should be seen as an investment, investment in future marketing of the city,” said Atkinson. “Things can be done well without being extravagant. When Brisbane bid we came in under $5 million. I can’t remember what Sydney bid. It was an extraordinary amount. And given that I was involved in the organising of Sydney, there was a lot of wastage, a lot of meetings that didn’t really need to happen, a lot of carry-on.”
